For your optimistic-nihilist reading pleasure, a poem: The Sweet Relief of Stardust Futures

My favorite high school teacher (European History & English) parted with his vinyl collection some years ago, giving it all to a classmate of mine, who then passed on all the Steely Dan albums to me. Taking it out of the sleeve, dropping the needle, hearing the warmth and wear, I feel a connection to a younger version of the man who was already in his forties when I first sat in his classroom — a connection I can't imagine getting any other way.

Not many newsstands left in . This one, just west of the Chopin Theatre on Division, is run by a blind man who shows up, as I believe he puts it, because it's "better than sitting at home like a cabbage".

Its name comes from Carl Sandburg, who once compared ships pulling out to “mastodons, arising from lethargic sleep.” Our goal for bigshoulders.city is to build a community of friends and neighbors across the Windy City. Toot your pho place recommendations, meet-up ideas, pothole gripes, creative dibs, and cross-town baseball taunts—whatever you want, as long it abides by our short and sweet content policy.
