Red-whiskered Bulbul. First seen in the Huntington Library Botanical Gardens in 1968, these non-native birds survived a years-long effort to eradicate them. It was ultimately determined that they are not a threat to local agriculture or native species, and a small population continues to thrive in the gardens.

Sculpted about two hundred years before I was born, but looks like someone I would like to have known. Such a friendly face, no?

"People out, medical supplies in." White Stork continues to work on evacuations from Ukraine and getting medical and other humanitarian supplies to people in need.

Consider making a donation to help support the people of Ukraine as they endure this relentless war of aggression.

A fascinating piece about how hard it is to get carbon offsets right. Particularly interesting to me is the fact that the net gains of forest offsets are at risk of being wiped out by forest fire... which is increasingly likely in many areas due to drought.

Good morning! A post just rolled across my fedi-timeline saying not to post about politics on Mastodon, so I'm here to remind you that:

1 "politics" refers to decision-making about how to live together in groups
2 choosing to not participate in political discussion is saying you support the status quo, and is a political stance
3 abstaining from politics because you feel safe from its impacts is a privilege and a choice to abandon your more vulnerable neighbours

Has anyone made a list of #misinformation researchers here on #Mastodon? I’d also like to connect with anyone involved with media literacy! #science #socialscience #psychology #sociology #education

Significant step forward for self-driving cars: therobotreport.com/waymo-to-be

"The permit allows Waymo to give rides in its autonomous vehicles (AVs) without any driver in the vehicle, but it does not allow Waymo to charge for these rides."

That'll change before long, no doubt.

If hydrogen power requires that we extract hydrogen from water via electrolysis, won't it use up our fresh water, making it unsustainable? Fascinating discussion of why this is mostly not a concern.

bigshoulders.city

bigshoulders.city is a Mastodon instance for Chicagoans current, former, and future. Its name comes from Carl Sandburg, who once compared ships pulling out to “mastodons, arising from lethargic sleep.” Our goal for bigshoulders.city is to build a community of friends and neighbors across the Windy City. Toot your pho place recommendations, meet-up ideas, pothole gripes, creative dibs, and cross-town baseball taunts—whatever you want, as long it abides by our short and sweet content policy.
