bigshoulders.city supports exclusive lists. If you set a list you’ve made to “exclusive,” posts from members of that list will appear only in that list’s timeline and not in your home feed.

This feature is great for following accounts that only post about one subject, for crossposting accounts, or for pixelfed feeds.

Use the web interface to set a list as Exclusive. You can only add accounts you follow to lists.

bigshoulders.city supports local-only posts. These are great for content only relevant to chicagoans. :flag:

A post marked as local-only will appear only to bigshoulders.city users.

A followers-only post marked as local-only will appear only to bigshoulders.city users who also follow you.

If you uncheck "Allow my posts to reach other instances by default" in Preferences - Other, your posts from any source—including apps—will be local by default. You can also use the local_only emoji.

🎉 bigshoulders.city is now running ! 🎉

This "fork", based on mastodon and developed by @darius, includes some community-oriented features mastodon does not have.

This thread will be pinned and outline the two biggest ones. 👇

BIGSHOULDERS.CITY WILL BE DOWN TOMORROW (5/12) TO MIGRATE TO HOMETOWN AND ADD LOCAL-ONLY POSTING AND OTHER FEATURES.

Expect an extended outage, at least 8 hours.

a reminder that malort.report redirects to bigshoulders.city, for fun reasons

In an attempt to reduce registration spam that has lately been affecting some Mastodon servers on Masto.host I will be applying a custom patch to Mastodon v3.2.1.

This will require a restart of instances hosted on Masto.host and cause ~30 seconds of downtime.

You can read the details here: https://masto.host/testing-custom-code-to-fight-spam-registration-on-mastodon/

Do let me know if you notice any registration problems with this patch and if you were getting regular spam registrations see if there is any reduction in the next days.

Since soapbox is using Pleroma it is no longer possible to detect new instances using fediverse.network. There are no gab instances anymore.

This account is shutting down since it is no longer useful.

it's come to our attention that someone with an account on bigshoulders.city has been using their main account to textsearch posts to argue with on our timeline, including defending alt-right figures.

their local account has been silenced, and their primary instance blocked.

@saetron not going out of our way to find them, don't have enough time or energy for that, but when they show up in the mentions of our users lack of moderation will be considered reason to block

@fuzzylynx single-user instances are definitely exempt but it’s helpful if the fact they’re single user is made clear on their homepage

so-called "loli" content will be treated as indistinguishable from child pornography for the purposes of moderation.

We did not have a privacy policy, which was an oversight on our part. That's been fixed; it's now at bigshoulders.city/terms, and is basically identical to the mastodon.social privacy policy.

@amolith actually, yes, so thank you for this reminder to implement one ASAP.

instance blocks context

@SuperDicq we don’t need “windmills of peace” in this federation

going ahead and blocking any instance with a "windmill" (swastika) emoji.

a previously-unknown nazi instance boosted this post, so I'm adding more blocks as the replies to this account increase.

bigshoulders.city

bigshoulders.city is a Mastodon instance for Chicagoans current, former, and future. Its name comes from Carl Sandburg, who once compared ships pulling out to “mastodons, arising from lethargic sleep.” Our goal for bigshoulders.city is to build a community of friends and neighbors across the Windy City. Toot your pho place recommendations, meet-up ideas, pothole gripes, creative dibs, and cross-town baseball taunts—whatever you want, as long it abides by our short and sweet content policy.
